Construction Term Highlight: Shotcrete walls

Shotcrete walls involve the application of concrete or mortar to surfaces by projecting the material at a high velocity, enabling placement and compaction at the same time. Shotcrete is also used for protecting excavated surfaces and used as support for tunnel surfaces. Shotcrete has become an option to replace cast-in-place concrete for elements like retaining walls and slope stabilization.

Shotcrete walls are being used on a section of the Mid-Coast Trolley light rail from La Jolla Colony Drive to Nobel Drive.

Mid-Coast Trolley Construction Along Genesee Avenue, SANDAG Project

Work for the Mid-Coast Trolley at the Genesee Avenue and La Jolla Village Drive intersection is expected to begin on Feb. 8. This will require a full closure of east and westbound traffic on La Jolla Village Drive as well as other lane and road closures.

Torrey Pines Golf Course

A South Course remodel is slated to begin this month. The remodel will include a new irrigation system, improved bunker infrastructure and improved turf on approaches. In addition, two holes will undergo a minor transformation to improve shot values that San Diego residents, visitors and TOUR players alike can all enjoy. The City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department is proud to improve its flagship golf property for everyone.

Torrey Pines Golf Course grandstands were installed for the Farmers Insurance Open held on Jan. 23-27, 2019.

Gilman Drive Bridge, SANDAG and Caltrans Project

The Gilman Drive Bridge will celebrate its official opening in early February. Finishing work, including sand blasting and patching blemishes, has been completed. After the bridge’s opening, additional striping, sidewalks and crosswalk improvements adjacent to the project site will be conducted as part of the Medical Center Drive South Improvement Project.

UCSD Mesa Housing Pedestrian and Bike Bridge, UC San Diego and City of San Diego Project

The Mesa Housing Pedestrian and Bike Bridge Project will create a new bridge spanning across the Central Canyon on the easterly side of the UC San Diego Campus to directly link the Mesa Housing Neighborhood with the Medical Center Campus. The bridge will provide pedestrians and bicyclists with a significantly shorter and safer route to campus utilizing the new Gilman Drive Bridge.

The first of three girder deliveries are scheduled for late February 2019. For more information on this project, visit: adminrecords.ucsd.edu/Notices/2018/2018-9-26-1.html

Fire Station 50

Fire Station 50 (to be located on the southeast corner of Nobel Drive and Shoreline Drive) is currently in its design and permitting phase. Building construction is anticipated to start in late summer 2019. Meanwhile, grading (ensuring a level base for the project’s foundation) on the project site will start soon, and the wet utilities (water and sewer connections) will begin shortly after the site grading. Stay tuned for more information about this project in the coming months.
