Construction Term Highlight: Abutments

Abutments in construction derives from the verb "abut," meaning to "touch by means of a mutual border." They are the concrete structures where the end of the bridge rests. The northern side abutments for the UC San Diego Mesa Housing Pedestrian and Bike Bridge are complete, and they connect the bridge to the UC San Diego Health campus. More detail on the project is provided below in this newsletter.

Mid-Coast Trolley Construction Along Genesee Avenue, SANDAG Project

Work for the Mid-Coast Trolley at the Genesee Avenue and La Jolla Village Drive intersection is complete. This work involved setting and securing four mega-ton girders at the intersection. The construction schedule for the girder installation at the final intersection in this area (at the UTC Transit Center) will be provided in the coming weeks.

Due to the complexity of the work, closures can be postponed at any time without notice. For up-to-date closure updates, visit KeepSanDiegoMoving.com/MidCoastTrolley, Facebook.com/MidCoastTrolley, or @ShiftSanDiego on Twitter.

The Mid-Coast Trolley girders are set in place at the La Jolla Village Drive and Genesee Avenue intersection the night of Friday, Feb. 8 into the morning of Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019.

Torrey Pines Golf Course

A South Course remodel is slated to begin this month. The remodel will include a new irrigation system, improved bunker infrastructure and improved turf on approaches. In addition, two holes will undergo a minor transformation to improve shot values that both San Diego residents, visitors and TOUR players alike can all enjoy.

Gilman Drive Bridge, SANDAG and Caltrans Project

Additional striping, sidewalks and crosswalk improvements adjacent to the project site will be conducted as part of the Medical Center Drive South Improvement Project.

Fire Station 50

Fire Station 50 (to be located on the southeast corner of Nobel Drive and Shoreline Drive) is currently in its design and permitting phase. Building construction is anticipated to start in late summer 2019. Meanwhile, grading (ensuring a level base for the project’s foundation) on the project site will start soon, and the wet utilities (water and sewer connections) will begin shortly after the site grading. Stay tuned for more information about this project in the coming months.
