Construction Term Highlight: Shoring

Shoring is the process of temporarily supporting a building, vessel or structure with metal or wooden props — called "shores" — during construction, repairs or alterations. Shoring will soon be removed from one of the Mid-Coast Trolley construction projects: the Trolley underpass at La Jolla Colony Drive.

Mid-Coast Trolley Construction, SANDAG Project

Genesee Avenue
Mid-Coast Trolley work along Genesee Avenue is ongoing and will require some upcoming overnight closures to allow for deck pours and falsework removal. Teams are hoping to complete work planned north of La Jolla Village Drive before the winter shopping construction moratorium. Access to up-to-date closure details is available via KeepSanDiegoMoving.com/MidCoastNotices.

La Jolla Village Drive Overpass
Overnight closures will be in place on the La Jolla Village Drive overpass above Interstate 5 and on both loop on-ramps to I-5 from La Jolla Village Drive, Sunday, July 28, through Thursday, Aug. 1. Work hours will be 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. More information on this closure can be found at ShiftSanDiego.com.
Trolley Underpass at La Jolla Colony Drive
To accommodate work on the Trolley underpass, lanes of La Jolla Colony Drive have been widened and restriped to provide one lane of traffic in each direction on what was previously the northbound side of La Jolla Colony Drive. During the second phase of work, traffic will be moved to the southbound side of the road. The traffic switch for the second phase is estimated to begin at the end of August or in early September. Construction of the Trolley underpass is expected to be completed later this year.
Nobel Drive
Construction continues on the Trolley bridge south Nobel Drive and at the Nobel Drive Trolley station. Falsework installation is underway and has been completed almost all the way to Interstate 5. Once the falsework is fully installed, concrete pours for these sections will follow.

Rose Canyon Bike Path, SANDAG Project

The majority of the of the newly aligned Rose Canyon Bike Path is now open for bicyclists and pedestrians to enjoy! The path features more than 7,000 feet of new fencing and guardrail, newly striped lanes and underground utilities. A small portion of the path located at La Jolla Colony Drive will remain in the temporary alignment until the Mid-Coast Trolley Underpass is completed to allow for construction site access.

The Rose Canyon Bike Path is ready to ride!

Westbound State Route 52 to Northbound Interstate 5 Auxiliary Lane, Caltrans Project

A new auxiliary lane will be built from the westbound SR-52 to northbound I-5 freeway connector to the La Jolla Colony Drive off-ramp. Signage will be in place to alert drivers when that connector is closed for work and will indicate recommended detours.

Fire Station 50, City of San Diego Project

The foundation has been placed on-site at Fire Station 50 and wall structure began construction in early June 2019. The shell construction should be completed in mid-August. Work on the full building and utilities is pending approval.

Fire Station 50 will be located on the southeast corner of Nobel Drive and Shoreline Drive and is anticipated to open late summer or fall 2020. Future work that may create impacts to the public include: connections to the existing sewer line, installation of the emergency traffic signal and cutting through the existing median.

Torrey Pines Golf Course, City of San Diego Project

Major south course renovations are set to be complete by the end of August. Improvements include the installation of new wall-to-wall irrigation to increase efficiency and effectiveness of watering. Fairways and bunkers will be strategically shifted on holes 4, 9, 10, 12 and 17. Collars will be re-grassed, and there will be new approaches on all holes. More information can be found at sandiego.gov/park-and-recreation/golf/torreypines/southcourseproject.
