Shift Program Construction Update

September 2019

With new construction on the horizon, the Shift program is dedicated to providing you with up-to-date information about the major projects bringing new amenities and resources to your neighborhood. Please note, construction schedules are subject to change. To confirm the information below and other work schedules, contact Shift at 844-SHIFT-SD.

Visit ShiftSanDiego.com or follow @ShiftSanDiego on Twitter for continuous updates on construction information that may impact your neighborhood.

Construction Term Highlight: Backfilling

Backfilling is the process of putting soil back into a trench or foundation once excavation and related underground work has been completed. Several construction projects in the Shift area are undergoing backfilling, including Mid-Coast Trolley work along Voigt Drive, the Trolley underpass at La Jolla Colony Drive and Fire Station 50.

Rideshare Week: Sept. 30 - Oct. 4

Join iCommute during Rideshare Week — Monday, Sept. 30 through Friday, Oct. 4 — as they celebrate the many benefits of commute alternatives. Rather than driving alone, share the ride and socialize, work, rest or read while someone else drives. For more information on how you can participate, visit icommutesd.com/events/rideshare-week.

Free Ride Day: Oct. 2

Tuesday, Oct. 2, is Free Ride Day! Celebrate with MTS and NCTD by enjoying free Trolley, train and fixed-route bus rides throughout the San Diego region. For more information and details about how you can participate, visit sdmts.com/free-ride-day and gonctd.com/freerideday.

Mid-Coast Trolley Construction, SANDAG Project

Voigt Drive and the Voigt Drive Trolley Station
The Mid-Coast team will be conducting full closures on Voigt Drive — on the UC San Diego campus — for underground and electrical work required for the installation of elevation towers at the future Voigt Drive Trolley station. Closures will take place on Oct. 8 and Oct. 9, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. Current work includes the backfilling and paving of the trenches, which contain underground wiring for the construction site.

Trolley Underpass at La Jolla Colony Drive
The second phase of work on the Trolley underpass is underway, providing one lane of traffic in each direction on La Jolla Colony Drive. Current work on site includes pulling in the shoring beams and completing the backfill for the underpass. Construction of the Trolley underpass is expected to be completed in early 2020.

Crews constructed the north half of the Trolley underpass in summer 2019

North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood, UC San Diego Project

New traffic signals will be installed at the intersection of North Torrey Pines Road and Muir College Drive, and a new streetlight will be installed on the northbound side of North Torrey Pines Road. Work is estimated to begin in mid-December. In addition, northbound lane closures on North Torrey Pines Road will be implemented to begin work on the installation of the water line. Timing for these closures are to-be-determined. Ongoing work on the academic and residential buildings is continuing daily. Two residential towers, buildings 3 and 4, will be topping out this month.

Work on the North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood continues

Fire Station 50, City of San Diego Project

Fire Station 50, to be located on the southeast corner of Nobel Drive and Shoreline Drive, is anticipated to open in late summer or fall 2020. The north section of the building — facing Nobel Drive — has been backfilled, completing site grading. In addition, the concrete walls for the full structure and the framing of the second and third floor decks — or floor for each level — are complete.  Framing of the third-floor walls and upper roof sections are ongoing through October and will near completion in November. Electrical, plumbing and site revegetation work will all begin mid-October, tentatively.

Scripps La Jolla Campus Parking Garage and Bridge, Private Project

A 2,000-car parking garage will be built on the Scripps La Jolla campus for both patient and employee parking. In addition, a bridge will be built across Scripps Health Drive to connect the structure to the Anderson Pavilion on Scripps campus. Work completed this month included six slab-on-grade concrete pours. Slab-on-grade concrete work, or floating slab foundations, is a structural engineering practice where the concrete slab that serves as the foundation for the structure is formed from a mold set into the ground. The parking garage is anticipated to be complete in June 2020.
